Thank You Very Much, and Please Be On Time

Thank You Note

The thank-you note seems to be a thing of the past—or is it just a generational thing?  I was brought up to thank people for presents.  I send gifts: a birthday check, newborn baby or wedding present.  Then I hear nothing, so I can’t help wondering if the gift actually made its way to the intended party or if it was stolen from their front porch. An announcement requires a gift. Hey, I’m not looking for a big slap on the back, but just knowing if it arrived would be great.  Okay, I’ll take an email—that way, no stamp or mailing would be involved. (Although, come to think of it, the person certainly had the time to put the stamp on their announcement—which is really for the purpose of getting a present—and stick it in the mailbox…)

And another thing.  Meet for coffee at 10 a.m.  Okay, I sit and the person shows up at 10:30 because she had to go home and get her cell phone which she forgot.   I’m really wondering about a generation of people who lack respect for the time of others. There’s a disconnect. Maybe it’s time for a new book on basic etiquette 101. Do I have to include a self-addressed stamped envelope with my gift? Women of my generation are mad as hell and wonder what’s our next move. I’m suggesting a new card category to Hallmark. How about a “Did you get your present?” card?
